B´nei Mitzvah Training

All candidates for Bar/Bat Mitzvah at Congregation Shir Shalom must be children of Temple members in good standing.  Candidates must regularly attend Religious School.  Behavior, and performance at Religious School must meet the guidelines set by the school.

Becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah requires a certain level of proficiency in the Hebrew language and familiarity with services.  Participation in regular Shabbat worship at Friday evening, Saturday morning and B´nei Mitzvah services, enables our students to develop a feeling for and an understanding
of the service and the obligation of Jewish worship.

It has been a long standing expectation that candidates for the Bar/Bat Mitzvah program will have been students in our Religious School, or an equivalent program, for a minimum of three years prior to the year of Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

The congregation also recognizes that becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah is the beginning of lifelong study as a Jewish adult. We anticipate that all of our B´nei Mitzvah will remain in the Religious School through eighth grade, continue through the High School of Jewish Studies and Confirmation.

Generally, the B´nei Mitzvah Service is held on Shabbat Morning beginning at 10:30 AM. Friday Evening and Havdalah B´nei Mitzvah Services are also available.  Additional Requirements are necessary.  Please call the Rabbi´s Office to schedule a meeting if you are interested in learning about the requirements for these options.
