On September 28, Shir Shalom professional choir member David Cohen was attending a concert at Kleinhans Music Hall. Walking down some steps he tripped, hitting his head and suffered cardiac arrest. His heart had stopped and he wasn’t breathing. Two audience members rushed over and began to perform CPR. After a few minutes of CPR, David’s heart began beating again and he survived.
Last June Craig Small, a Shir Shalom member and the new president of the Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies, was attending a Rolling Stones concert in Cleveland. The person next to him suddenly fell over. Craig checked for the man’s pulse and there wasn’t any. So Craig began performing CPR, which he had learned at Iris Danziger’s class at our Jewish Federation, saving the man’s life.
At this Sunday’s Men’s Group meeting both David and Craig will be speaking, telling their stories. They will be joined by Iris Danziger who teaches the CPR course at the Federation. Dr. Danziger is an ear, nose, and throat physician. She is also president of the Erie County Medical Society and Board President of UB Hillel.
The three of them will tell us not only why everyone should learn CPR, but also what is involved in learning it, and where to learn it (hint: the Jewish Federation teaches it!). |
