Torah Thoughts – Vayera

If ever there was an example of actions speaking louder than words, it would be in this week’s Torah portion, Vayera, when Abraham and Sarah rush to accommodate their three guests.  In no time at all, The guests feet are washed, they have a cool drink at hand, and a feast of cakes and lamb is being prepared.  From this one example, the rabbis derive the important principle of welcoming guests, hachnasat orchim.

Indeed, Abraham and Sarah’s action on that one particular morning have inspired billions of people in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam to make hospitality a central part of our religious tradition.  How amazing that a little exertion by our patriarch and matriarch could have such an immense impact on all of our lives.  We learn from this the importance of our actions even the quiet moments of our lives.  Let us continue to open our doors and our hearts to the strangers in our midst.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Alex
